아서
랙험의 일러스트레이션 세계
|
일러스트레이션의 황금 시대라 불리기도 하는
시기가 있었다. 대략 1870년에서 1930년 사이의 시기이다.
아서 랙험(Arthur Rackham: 1867~1939)은 이 시기를 대표하는 일러스트레이터라고 할
수 있다. 그의 작품들 중 상당수는 오늘날까지도 다시 인쇄,
출간되는 경우가 적지 않다. 그러나 랙험의 진정한 재능은
역시 한정판 또는 초판본에서만 올바르게 인식할 수 있다는
것이 정설이다. 이 때문인지, 오늘날에도 랙험의 초판본
및 한정판 도서들은 수집가들의 집중적인 표적이 되고 있다.
앞으로 2회에 걸쳐서 아서 랙험을 소개하기로 한다.

랙험은
빅토리아 시대의 영국 런던에서 1867년에 태어났는데, 대부분의 저명한
예술가들이 그렇듯, 매우 어린 시절부터 그림 그리기에 재능을 나타냈다.
가난한 집안에서 12명의 자녀들 가운데 하나로 태어났고, City of London
School에서 공부했다. 그리고 생계를 위해 18세 때 서기로 취직했다.
찰스 디킨슨의 작품 세계에서 중요한 모티프가 되곤 했던 바로 그런
서기였다. 그는 생업에 종사하는 틈틈이 Lambeth School of Art에서
그림을 공부했고, Scraps나 Chums 같은 잡지에 틈틈이 작품을 기고하기도
했다. 1891년에 그는 Pall Mall Budget이라는 주간지의 일러스트레이션
리포터로 활동하게 되었고, 그는 이 일에서 단번에 두각을 나타내었다.
그러나 이 시기의 랙험의 작품들은 일러스트레이터로서의 능력을 보여주기에는
충분했지만, 그의 작품 세계 특유의 유머와 낭만, 그리고 어떤 예술혼
같은 것이 여물지는 않은 상태였다.

그는 이듬해인 1892년에 서기 일을 그만 두고
미래에 대한 불확실성으로 가득한 새로운 직업, 다시 말해서
전업 예술가의 길로 들어섰다. 랙험은 주간지 Westminster
Budget에서 일러스트레이션 리포터로 일하면서, 당시로서는
유망하게 떠오르는 새로운 시장이었던 도서 시장의 문을
두드리기 시작했다. 1895년 출간된 워싱턴 어빙(Washington
Irving)의 Tales of a Traveller에서 볼 수 있는 왼쪽 작품은 당시의
다른 일러스트레이터들과 기본적인 양식에서 그다지 큰
차이가 없었다. 이후 1896년에 Zankiwank & Bletherwitch의
출간으로 그는 비로소 두각을 나타내기 시작했다. 1901년에
랙험은 Royal Watercolour Society 회원으로 선출되었고,
같은 해에 동협회의 여름 및 겨울 전시회에 출품했다. 그리고
같은 해에 Langham Sketching Club의 회원이 되었다. 랙험은
에디스 스타키와 1903년에 결혼했는데, 스타키는 1904년에
첫 아이를 사산했다.

어네스트
브라운 앤 필립스 측이 렉험에게 Rip Van Winkle의 삽화 51장을 부탁했고,
그 작품은 세인트 루이스 국제전시회와 뒤셀도르프 국제 전시회에 출품되기도
했다. 그가 정상급의 일러스트레이터로 부각된 것은 역시 1905년에 출간된
바로 이 Rip Van Winkle 때문이었다. 같은
해에 그는 밀란 국제전시회에서 금메달을 수상했고, 1906년에 피터팬(Peter
Pan in Kensington Gardens)이 출간된 이후 그 수록 삽화를 영국 레스터의
여러 화랑에서 전시했다. 1907년에는 이상한 나라의 앨리스(Alice in
Wonderland)의 삽화 계약을 맺고 같은 해에 책이 출간되었다. (아래 오른쪽 그림 참조.)
1905년 이후 랙험의 작품은 한정판으로도 출간되는 경우가 많았다. 랙험
자신의 친필 사인이 들어가 있는 경우가 대부분이었다. 나중에 서점
판매용으로 대량 인쇄된 판본에서는 찾아 볼 수 없는 삽화가 들어 있는
경우도 많았다. (그의 마지막 작품은 사후인 1940년에 출간된 The Wind
In the Willow였다(미국에서 1940년에, 영국에서 1951년에 출간)).
1908년에 딸 바바라 랙험이 태어났고, 같은
해 11월에 데일리 미러지가 일러스트레이터와 작가가 반드시
함께 작업해야 한다는 랙험의 견해를 중요하게 다루었다.
이듬해에 Artworker's Guild의 조합원으로 선출되었다.
1910년 1월에 랙험은 작가 클럽에서 일러스트레이션의 역할에
대해 강연을 했고, 하이네만 출판사와 The Ring의 일러스트레이션
계약을 맺었으며, Royal Watercolour Society의 부회장으로
선출되어 이후 2년 동안 재직했다. 그리고 데일리 뉴스지에
케리커처 장르의 퇴조에 대한 자신의 견해를 기고했다.
랙험은
1911년에 개최된 바르셀로나 국제 전시회에서 1등 매달을
수여 받았고, 바르셀로나 박물관 측은 이 때 전시되었던
작품들(A Midsummer Night's Dream, Undine, The Ring,
The Imp of Smoke 등에 수록된 일러스트레이션)을 구입했다.
1912년에는
파리에서 Associate Nationale des Beaux Arts의 회원으로 선출되었고,
1914년에는파리의 루브르와 독일의 라이프찌히 등에서 전시회를 열었다.

그 후 몇 년 동안 랙험은 알버트 왕, 메리 공주 등의 선물용 도서의
삽화를 그리기도 했다. 1919년에는 master of Art Worker's Guild로
선출되었다. 이 시기에 그는 콜게이트사의 비누 광고 제작에 참여하여
많은 수입을 올리기도 했다. 랙험은
1939년 9월 6일 자택에서 암으로 세상을 떠났다. 그의 일러스트레이션
작품의 가장 탁월한 특징이라면 역시 일러스트레이션의 기본, 그러니까
작품을 통해서 줄거리를 말하고 있다는 점일 것이다. 세부적인 장면의
치밀한 묘사, 이야기를 구체화시키는 상상력과 창조성 등은 그의 작품이
지닌 중요한 특징이다. 그러한 특성은 16세기 독일 화가 알브레히트
뒤러와 알브레히트 알트도르퍼의 영향을 느끼게 해준다. 셰익스피어,
찰스 디킨스, 루이스 캐롤 등의 작품을 포함한 60여 권의 작품에서 그의
일러스트레이션과 만날 수 있다. 아서 랙험의 작품은 고전적인 소설과
어린이 문학 분야에서 일러스트레이션의 고전으로 계속 남게 될 것이다.
